Paperdoll People

There's this species
Of which many have heard.
They're the Paperdoll People
But most refuse to acknowledge them.
"Only imaginary," we humans say.
But they are not.
They are as real as you
As real as me.
Maybe more so, in my own case.
(I can't speak for you.)

The Paperdoll People.
So much like us.
But smaller.
Paper thin.
They never worry about their weight.
Faces forever fixed
In an unnatural
Unfeeling
Meaningless smile.
Or is it a grimace?
I never can tell.
Beautiful clothing
Cheerful and gay
Clothes their featureless form.
Covers the nothingness
That is they.

They gaze at us
With empty eyes
And see past our facade of reality.
The Paperdoll People know.
Their thoughtless minds cannot be fooled.
Our masks of emotion
Of importance
Of normality
Are like glass to them.
They see the weaknesses we try to hide.

The Paperdoll People
Are of sympathetic nature.
They know what will make us happy.
They beckon us closer,
Bid us to follow
To echo their noiseless words
And imitate their motionless movements.
Readily we submit.
We follow.
We imitate.
Until we are nothing more than
Life-sized Paperdoll People.
