Pearls of wisdom, charm, and grace.
Pearls of wit, and a pretty face.
Sweet melodies, poetic words,
Some left unspoken,
Others left unheard.
A gentle voice, entwining hands,
Loving eyes, a timeless dance
Of joy and heartbreak
And joy once more
From the moment my heart unlocked its door.
These pearls I strung around my neck
Until you came along.
And after that, it all progressed
Like the cowboy's dreary song.
You had me from hello,
And at our first embrace,
I wished to never let you go.
I thought I'd found my place.
One by one my pearls I gave
'Til only a few remained.
And these I promised to keep aside
until not only my heart was claimed.
One by one I dropped them
Into your open hand.
But you have thrown them to the ground
Like a fistful of sand.
So here I sit
Among the dust
Of the joy that I no longer own.
I gather together
My wasted pearls
And string them on a song.
Never again to trust
My treasure to a boy.
Never again to let my heart
Be taken as a toy.
It's not the first occurrence;
I'll surely learn with time
To save my graces, beauty, and wit
Instead of casting them before the swine.
