May the path that I tread be narrow and straight.
May the road that I pace be smooth.
May the sun, wind, and rain be gentle.
May the sky above me be blue.
May friends walk along beside me
And the enemies lose my trail.
And may the birds sing o'er me,
Though I walk through the mountain or vale.
May my journey hence be pleasant,
May my travels be filled with song.
But every traveler knows this truth:
In life, things will, things must go wrong.
The brightest skies will darken.
Away the birds do fly.
The sun will scorch the daffodils.
The weeping heavens will sigh.
A knife in the back from a friendly hand,
Inevitably sure to come,
Will silence soon my amiable wishes.
When all is said and done
My enemies will surely find me
And steal my comrades away.
So I'll take a torch to the ropes of the bridges
And watch them all fall away.
In life there shall be changes
Through joys and through the pain.
And on this tempestuous voyage,
My candles are silenced by rain.
With broken relationships I ignite my signals,
With each sacrificial fire, a lesson I've learned.
May I forever light my ongoing way
With the bridges I have burned.
